Animals Life Cycles

A Life Cycle is how an organism passes through a series of development stages on its ways to adulthood. Mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates all have their own unique way through life. Only 3% of all animals on this planet give birth to live young.

In order for an animal to grow they need to eat, stay safe and reproduce. This means that from birth they need to be equipped for survival at all times.

Many animals such as amphibians and some insects go through something called a metamorphosis, meaning a complete change.

Amphibians will start off their first part of their childhood developing in water breathing through gills. Once reaching adulthood they will develop lungs to allow them to live on land.

Some insects like butterflies start off life as an egg, hatching into their larva stage (looking very worm like) passing into the pupa stage, at this stage the animal will not eat at all and will be cleverly camouflaged to hide itself during the process. Lastly the insect will emerge from the pupa stage having evolved into its final adult stage.

In this workshop we discuss and display animals with a wide variety of varying Life Cycles whilst giving the students the chance to touch, hold and interact with them.
